The Perils of Modern Art

Modern art is something that people either seem to like or hate. There really isn’t much middle ground or room for discussion. All modern art isn’t created equal, though, so it becomes an interesting tale of human opinion and subjective analysis. In short, some modern art is very beautiful and some isn’t. Some people ‘get it,’ and others don’t. While that may seem to be unique to modern art, it really isn’t. There are plenty of other artistic styles that were ridiculed by some and celebrated by others. That was the case in the past, and it’s still the case today.

If you’re interested in modern art, don’t assume that everyone is going to like what you like. On the other hand, don’t think that you have to change your opinions so that others will accept you. The person who creates art doesn’t do it for others, he does it for himself. Your ‘job’ in liking art should be the same. Do what feels right to you, and don’t concern yourself with the interests and opinions of others. That’s why there are so many artists out there today – because people like different things and no two people are the same.

When people create modern art, they aren’t worried about whether it will fetch millions of dollars. They’re in the moment and they’re making something that’s an expression of themselves. Art is a very personal thing, and one person might not see something as artistic while another person would feel very differently about it. With modern art, there are so many feelings that can be evoked from a particular piece. Two people could see it completely differently, and attach great meaning to it – even though that meaning would be totally different for each of them. Modern art is often a triumph of the spirit of the artist, though it’s not always seen that way.
