In 1984, Plaza de la Raza assembled a large authentic Mexican Folk Art collection as a part of its Folk Life Festival. Folk arts from various regions in México were purchased for sale and display. The volume weight of this purchase was approximately 2,800 kilograms at a purchase price of 140,262.00 Mexican pesos. Since that time there have been many changes in the types of Mexican folk arts available for purchase, and in some cases, items have become unavailable. With this in mind, Plaza has decided to assemble the remainder of this purchase into a formal collection to be conserved for the education of those persons who may not get the chance to see these works otherwise.
